Geocache Description:

Hidden Streams

This is the fourth cache in the Hidden Streams series, featuring some of the lesser-known streams and rivers of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown. It draws its name and inspiration from the book Hidden Streams by Brian MacAongusa.

Warning: wet feet!

You will need to step into the stream to find this cache. Please exercise good judgment and care and do not attempt it if you feel the conditions are unsuitable.

Crinken Stream

Crinken Stream flows down the east slope of Carrickgollogan (near Rathmichael Wood cache), then runs briefly along the side of Lordello Road before cutting sharply right to serve as a field drain in the fields behind the house where I grew up. Crossing the right-of-way known locally as Deegan's Lane, it is culverted under the South-Eastern motorway, crosses Allies River Road, and the N11. It forms a decorative pond in the grounds of Woodbrook Golf Course (formerly Woodbrook House, home of the Cochrane family), runs down through the Woodbrook Glen housing estate and under the DART line and former landfill to Bray North Beach, reaching the sea at Remains of a Bygone Era cache.

When the South-Eastern Motorway was being built, significant flood attenuation works were carried out, including an enormous underground reservoir with a volume of 2,700 m3.

Access

Access to the lane is by a gate at the given waypoint. Open the pedestrian gate on the right and shut it behind you.

The cache is hidden along a public right of way known locally as Deegan's Lane, linking Ballybride Road to Ferndale Road. It is quite overgrown and occasionally muddy, and in practice it may not be passable along its entire length. This right of way has existed since time immemorial; it is listed in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown's 2010-2016 development plan (see Appendix G and Map 14); and it is not contested by the landowners. You are legally entitled to walk along this lane.

If you come by car, you can park safely on the "old" Crinken Lane, now a little-used cul-de-sac. The stop at the bottom of Crinken Lane is served by the 145, 45A and 84 buses.

The cache

The cache is hidden beside a low stone wall that forms an arch across the stream. You may need to stand in the stream. This is reflected in the terrain rating. Please select appropriate footwear! You'll find the cache on top of the low wall, tucked under some vegetation.
