The entry fee at this zoo recently doubled in price--from $10 to a whopping $20. A can of Coke still costs more. There are bigger/better zoos in Taiwan but this one is close and handy if you live in the Hsinchu area.
We like to watch the monkeys. One naughty one I remember was in a cage with a glass viewing area. When my wife was leaning against the glass and not really paying attention, this guy swung down on a rope from his perch high in the cage and loudly slapped the glass next to her, startling her. We noticed that he was trying to startle other women too, seeming to get enjoyment out of their squeals. So... my wife decided to get even with this monkey. She leaned against the glass in the same way as before, pretending not to pay attention, and sure enough, he came swinging down again and slapped the glass, making a loud noise. My wife didn't squeal but just pretended that nothing had happened. This seemed to frustrate him and so soon he was swinging and slapping again. Again my wife just totally ignored him. They kept up this slap/ignore game until we finally had to leave. The last time he tried, we all pretended to be REALLY startled and quickly left. Probably made his day. Fun!
