Geocache Description:

CC2 Clach na Ailbhean

This cache is a 120 ml Screw top container with logbook and pen.

This is the second of the Arran Clach of Cultures caches is hidden on an elephant shaped rock on the A481 which encircles the Isle of Arran. The pun is very much intended, a Clach is a rock and each of these caches celebrates a cultural clash on Arran and a rock associated with a different animal.

Traditionally this glacial erratic, dumped here by a retreating glacier around 15,000 years ago is known as Clach an Fhion (the Hero Stone), but is most commonly referred to today as the Elephant Stone. Corrie is on of may communities on the island that has seen a great influx of retirees in recent years so that today a quarter of all Arranachs were born in England. A hundred years ago Gaelic was the dominant language in the north of Arran and Corrie marked the southern limit of Gaelic speaking majority. In 1891 there were still a handful of islanders who spoke no English at all, a century later the last two native Gaelic speakers on Arran died and with them the distinctive Arran dialect of a language mid way between Scottish and Irish Gaelic.

Many Thanks to Jango & Boba Fett for the original cache
