Geocache Description:

Birthplace of Devil Anse Hatfield

William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield was born at his parents' home here on "Straight Fork" of Mate Creek. His was born September 9, 1839 and he lived until 1921.

He served with distinction in the Civil War and later prospered in the timber industry. Anse and his wife Levicy had 13 children and his nephew became govenor of West Virginia.

He is best known as leader of the Hatfield clan during the famous Hatfield McCoy Feud. There is a statue of Anse at his grave in Sarah Ann, West Virginia.

This location is not only the birthplace of Devil Anse Hatfield but also is now the home of the infamous "Scotty May" Hatfield who appeared in the 2013 History Channel's "Hatfields & McCoys: White Lightning".
