Geocache Description:

This is 3 of 4 in a series touring Fullerton Elementary Schools I, II, III, and IV.

Cache #3 commemorates Fullerton III Elementary, built in 1951. Eight years after it opened, Fullerton III would see an odd chain of events that would turn it into Fremont Middle School. In 1959, a downtown hardware store caught fire and ignited a truck full of explosives. The resulting "Blast," as it became called, destroyed almost all buildings in an eight-block radius and left a crater bigger than the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. Fortunately it happened in the middle of the night, but 14 people still died in the tragedy. One of the blocks in ruins was between Washington, Douglas, Stephens, and Rose, the site of Central Junior High. The displaced students from Central attended Joseph Lane Middle School in double shifts for the next two years, during which time Fullerton III was remodeled into a new middle school (Fremont) and replaced by Fullerton IV, which remains open to this day.

The cache is just off Military Avenue at a spot where, through the trees, you can still see the original Fullerton III building within Fremont's various additions.
