Geocache Description:

This is a was supposed to be a challenge cache where you needed to complete the requirements of the challenge before logging - it has become a challenge to get published instead - 14 months after initially placing it!

The MacPacParents got told on a trip to the Hinterlands above Cairns that the definition of being out of civilisation was being more than 30km from any McD's Golden Arches!

Using this uncivilised description, we'd thought that a 'challenge' about being away from civilisation, finding and helping maintain these 'rural' caches and suggestions of what to carry in a maintenance kit was required.

However the cache submission had a bit of a tennis match start - back and forth to the reviewer as the cache wording and provability was never quite right to pass his eagle eye and the rules of a challenge cache. We were pushing the boundaries and the changes he was suggesting didn't fit with our idea of the 'theme.

A few months passed and we came back this way, only to find that the cache had vanished before it had been published... was it the wild winds or a school bus pick-up nearby that caused the issue? However another cache was made and put in a nearby, but hopefully more secure spot.

The challenge was reworded and ready to be submitted for review again - only to get a message from Groundspeak to say that 'challenge' caches were being suspended! Nooo - they are one of my favourite types, a goal to strive for for those of us who struggle with puzzles

Now returning for yet another maintenance run due to the Christchurch Mega looming close, we found the fenceline that the cache had been hidden on, 2nd time around, had been replaced and the interesting post with all manor of metal extras, was lying on the ground - with the cache still attached. A third hiding spot has now been found, so we are trying for third time lucky!

This crossroads is far away from civilisation... (by the above description) so if you find it needs some TLC and have the required help with you, we'd love it if you could assist in keeping it active for the next cachers to come this way - otherwise please post a 'needs maintenance' as well as your log, so we know that we need to visit Akaroa via the high road again.

Please place the cache back as found, to help its longevity (hopefully much longer that it has been in one place so far).

Needs Maintenance Act 1) The Geocacher.
If you come across a geocache that needs some repair, post a “Needs Maintenance” log on the geocache page. This will notify the geocache owner and add a “Needs Maintenance” icon (red wrench) to the geocache page. This lets other geocachers know that the geocache may not be in the best shape before they start their hunt.

Act 2) The Geocache Owner you need to clear.
Once you have made repairs, post an “Owner Maintenance” log on the geocache page. Fortunately, clearing the attribute is VERY easy. All you, the CO, must do is go to your cache listing and write an "Owner Maintenance" log. You do this just like any other log. Go to the "Log your visit" link at the top of the right sidebar, click that, and post your log. This will remove the attribute. Just to be clear, there is no other way to clear it. Writing a note, deleting any NM logs, etc. will not get it done. You MUST post an OM log to clear the attribute. This log will remove the “Needs Maintenance” icon. Don’t let your geocache be filtered out in searches by forgetting to post your “Owner Maintenance” log.

In the geomobile we carry spare logbooks, cable ties, baggies and DUCT TAPE (that can hold the world together!) to do impromptu maintenance.
