Geocache Description:

Visit this historic 1767 Hanover house.

The Fisher-Crouse House, a stone Germanic farmhouse, was built by immigrant Nicholas Fisher c. 1767.  For the time period, this was quite a valuable property and Nicholas’ will left the property to his son Valentine and his two sisters, Valentine has to pay his sisters 300 pounds each in exchange for his inheritance of the farm.  In 1798 when properties were taxed by the number of panes of glass (Federal Direct Tax of 1798 or “the glass tax”), this house had the greatest number of panes in the area, a total of 150 in ten windows).  He was a profitable farmer, growing wheat, rye, flax, apples, raising sheep and cows, and making cider and distilled liquor.

The property known as “Grubly Level” was sold to Jacob Young in 1826 and the property continued to be farmed for the next 125 years by a number of different owners, eventually purchased by Water and Laura Crouse in 1944. The Fisher-Crouse House and one acre was donated to the Hanover Area Historical Society in 1976 who maintained it and used it as a rental property until it was acquired by Hanover Borough in exchange for another property.  Now it is on the land of the YMCA.

The geocache hidden at the posted coordinates is a regular geocache, however, it is also part of the Hanover Geo Trail (HGT), a project designed in cooperation with Main Street Hanover and the Hanover Chamber of Commerce to promote the businesses and places of interest in the Hanover Area.
