Izki
This valley is bounded by mountains with large limestone rock walls, such as La Muela, Soila and Arlucea, circling it as if it were an amphitheater Originally Izki was water. Made between 40 and 100 million years ago this area was covered by a shallow sea. This is attested by the presence of fossil bivalves, corals, algae and other marine living beings, rocks of this Natural Park. Also found fossilized remains of large vertebrates, such as dinosaur eggs. Subsequently, different geological forces lifted and folded the material deposited on the seabed. The sandstone and limestone thus formed, and after thousands of years of erosion, resulted in a wide valley surrounded by steep mountains, which is the current relief. Among the different points of geological interest Izki -barranco Mill, Lower Lagoon Vírgala ...- include mines and natural asphalts Atauri Maestu.
Izki area comprises a large area which is located in the southern part of the Cantabrian Basin and more specifically in the Groove Alava, from a geological point of view. This training is distinguished by the large thickness of sediments deposited during the Late Cretaceous.
The overall structure and tectonics of the area are simple with gentle anticlines and synclines and normal faults of small displacement. Stresses in the tectonics of the Triassic diapir area Maestu, wide surface area (close to 14 km2). The slight difference in altitude in such a vast mountainous area results in an undulating terrain with some steep slopes. Most of the territory is located in Izki river basin, which is a geomorphological unit defined by the uniformity of lithological materials (sands and calcareous sandstones with sandy loams) and its relief: a succession of small hills and valleys together forming a wide, elliptical and bowl wedged between limestone mountains.
Age: Tertiary and Quaternary. Structural Cerro constitutes a unique element in the landscape morphology conditioned by the resistance of the Paleocene calcareous novice and the dip of the strata
Banks limestone, marl (with presence of fossil remains) and sand.
