Park in lay-by 115 which gives good views over the Insh Marshes and beyond to the Cairngorms.
The Insh Marshes is the most important flood plain mire in Britain, arguably in Europe, and has a very distinctive flora plus important populations of breeding and wintering wetland birds as well as nationally scarce mammals and invertebrates. The floodplain of the River Spey between Kingussie and Kincraig forms a Special Protection Area.
Over 2,000 acres (844 ha.) are owned by RSPB including woodland, farmland, moorland and large areas of marshland and open water.
Huge numbers of waders and wildfowl can be seen in spring; whooper swans and geese from Iceland visit each winter. Wild flowers are abundant until mid-summer. Winter, spring and early summer are the most exciting times to visit the reserve with Red Kites and Hen Harriers seeking refuge from persecution on this reserve in winter.
