Geocache Description:

The Yeoman Warders at the Tower of London were established in 1485 by Henry VII. They were originally bodyguards and responsible for guarding the Crown Jewels and the Tower prisoners, but now they are mainly tour guides and a tourist attraction.

No one knows for sure where the nickname Beefeater came from, but here are three possibilities as explained by a Yeoman.

1- King Henry VIII had two wives executed at the Tower and, as they had supporters, he was paranoid about being poisoned, so he had his bodyguards taste his food- including beef, not commonly eaten at the time.

2- Yeoman warders were paid part of their salary in beef as they needed to be strong to be royal bodyguards.

3- The warders lived in the Tower (and still do) and ate leftovers from the King's Table- including beef. The common people were jealous as their diet consisted of vegetables and fish from the Thames.

Of course the other Beefeater institution we recognise is the hamburger joint in Hood St which has been there since the 70's? It served our original "gourmet" burgers, although now it seems its glory days are over.

It has taken a while to find a suitable placement for this cache, although many possibilities were discussed, but driving past here on a caching day out, we realised we had finally found it a fitting home. We hope you enjoy.
