Castello Arechi

Il Castello di Arechi è un castello medievale, situato ad un'altezza di circa 300 metri sul livello del mare, che domina la città ed il golfo di Salerno. È detto di Arechi perché la costruzione di questa fortificazione si associa, tradizionalmente, al duca longobardo Arechi II.
Il castello assunse grande importanza militare nell'VIII secolo, con il principe longobardo Arechi II che, seppure non introdusse particolari modifiche al fortilizio, ne fece il cardine del sistema difensivo della città. Nel 774 questo principe considerò la posizione strategica della città e fece di Salerno la residenza della corte del ducato di Benevento. La città infatti rappresentava una testa di ponte per i commerci e per il controllo dei traffici con gli altri territori del Mediterraneo. Di qui la sua attenzione alle fortificazioni: il castello divenne il vertice di un sistema difensivo triangolare, le mura calavano giù lungo i pendii del colle Bonadies cingendo di fatto tutta l'antica Salernum fino al mare.
Il Castello di Arechi offre una panoramica sulla città e sull'intero golfo di Salerno ed è circondato da un parco con percorsi naturalistici immersi nella macchia mediterranea.
