Geocache Description:

This cache forms part of a series of caches placed along a recognised heritage trail which follows the course taken by the North Cork Militia and British Cavalry, ending up at Oulart Hill, where a decisive battle took place which lit the flame that culminated in a republic being declared in Wexford and a major uprising in Wexford, Wicklow and the East Coast of Ireland.

This cache was placed, replacing another similarly named cache that went missing (and hidden in the wrong place for the theme!). Not only is it in a different location, it's also a different container and hide type so a "different caching experience".

Nearby was the location of the local hedge school. A hedge school (scoil chois claí, or scoil ghairid) is the name for an educational practice found in rural Ireland in the 18th and 19th century, so named because of its rural nature. Local educated men would teach basic Irish language grammar, English and maths to children who would otherwise receive no education.

While the name suggests the classes took place out doors, they often took place in a barn or house. During the Penal laws between 1723 and 1782, where Catholic schools were banned, hedge schools continued and no known hedge teachers were known to be prosecuted.
