Geocache Description:

This Wherigo will take you on a tour of Detroit's Historic Woodlawn Cemetery. The cemetery was established in 1895 and immediately attracted some of the most notable names in the city. The grounds encompass 140 acres, but this tour will only cover some of the more architecturally interesting gems in the Historic section.

You will visit 12 sites of interest. You can walk it or drive; many of your stops are grouped together. The final cache is not at the posted coordinates.

The "SQ" in the Cache Name denotes a Geocaching Spirit Quest. This designation is to distinguish Caches that are placed in Cemeteries or Memorial Gardens and have a more Spiritual Meaning than most Caches that are out in the rest of the World. These may be not be found after dark or by certain Times of Day as well as those hunting them must be more respectful of the surroundings due to the fact that these areas have residents that have passed-on and should be respected, as well as the Natural Landscape that is above Ground. The "SQ" caches were started by cachers in Northwest Ohio and has since spread to many other states as well as Canada.

Cemetery (noun): From the Latin word cormeterium meaning “sleeping place" or "place of rest". In America's early days, as people passed away, they were buried within the confines of the local graveyard. As cities expanded and graveyards filled beyond capacity, however, graveyards were moved out to the borders of the towns for sanitary reasons. Families would travel the entire day to reach the new cemeteries. They would enjoy a packed lunch and relax, visiting their dear departed, before making the journey home. These newly-termed "lawn-park cemeteries" offered pretty ponds and winding paths meandering around the artistry of the mausoleums and monuments. Cemeteries like Woodlawn would become the precursor for our park systems.

There is no way to create one all-encompassing Wherigo for Woodlawn Cemetery and its inhabitants. There is too much rich history and funerary artistry. This Wherigo will introduce you to some of its more famous residents with a focus on the fascinating aspects of memorial art.

Wherigo is a toolset for creating and playing GPS-enabled adventures in the real world. By integrating a Wherigo experience, called a cartridge, with finding a geocache, the geocaching hunt can be an even richer experience. Among other uses, Wherigo allows geocachers to interact with physical and virtual elements such as objects or characters while still finding a physical geocache container. A Wherigo-enabled GPS device is required to play a cartridge. Learn more at Wherigo.com.

Wherigo Tips Wherigos are still evolving. This cartridge was tested on an iPhone 3, iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, Samsung Galaxy S3 and an Oregon 450T. If you have any trouble, here are a few tips:
* If you see an image but no text, scroll down.
* There is a lot of tree cover. If you "stop tracking" when heading to the zone, walk away and walk back.
* If your smartphone freezes, quit the cartridge, start it again and "resume" your game

On a personal note: Woodlawn Cemetery is a peaceful location bordering an urban neighborhood. Although I've never had a moment's trouble while visiting, please be aware of your surroundings. As the hours of the cemetery vary with the season, please check the gates before entering to ensure you have enough time and not get locked in. NO NIGHT CACHING! I hope you enjoy this Wherigo; it is my first.
