Monastery Traditional Cache
moghedian: Seems the cache has been plundered. Last report only logbook in cache. Plan on retrieving at some point but as not to disappoint further cachers we are archiving this cache. Still a nice place to visit and wander!

This cache is located in The Monastery area in Cumberland. This land used to be owned by the Trappist Monks and later by the Franciscan Friars. In the 1970s it was bought by the town of Cumberland.
Follow 295 north to the Rt. 114 (Diamond Hill Road) exit. Go south on 114 for a little more than a mile and you'll see the entrance on your right. As you enter, there is a playground within a chain-link fence. We started our hike by walking on the jogging trail that starts in front the playground. In a Rubbermaid container with a white lid. Start at the jogging trail in front of the playground. Follow the jogging trail as it passes a pond on right. Go and you will see a dirt trail on right near a bench. (We took this one by mistake at first and a little along the trail were startled by two deer! They let out a "bark and snort!" and bounded off into the woods!) The trail you want is not this one but the next trail on the right a little further along. Take it, you will be following a marsh to your right. You can stop at Nine Men's Misery. This is a spot where nine men captured and slain by Indians during King Philips's War are buried. (See picture). You'll eventually cross a brook, take a left up to an open field. A lane runs thru the field. Follow it to the left until the field opens up again. Go to the right corner and you should see a trail. That's as far as we'll take you. We were following a trail book and still had trouble up to this point!!
