Sour Lake had the foresight to strive to preserve as much of the downtown as they could, turning the old depot, where trains brought spa goers by the thousands to enjoy the smelly and medicinal Sour Lakes.
This is downtown Sour Lake. Sour Lake began as a small resort town and was visited by many, including Sam Houston, who enjoyed its medicinal waters. Colorful characters such as Dr. Mud plied their curative trades here...until the discovery of oil brought it all to a sad end.
