The village of Imber lies within Salisbury Plain in the middle of the Imber Ranges, the NW fringe of which can been seen a short walk away from the event co-ordinates.
Imber is one of the deserted villages in the UK. It has a story dating back into the mists of time but coming to an abrupt end during World War II. This year marks the 71st anniversary of the abandonment of the village on the instructions of the Ministry of Defence. It's now a Military training zone, out of bounds for all but a few days each year.
The focal point of the village is the Anglican Church of St Giles. The Baptist cemetery and a few other buildings are untouched by modern Military manoeuvers. The Church in Imber should be open from 10 am. There is an interesting museum collection, within, telling the story of some of the former residents of Imber. Surrounding the church are regularly changing buildings which simulate those to be found in the field of conflict.
The Trig point is unavailable as it is 'Out of Bounds'!! Nearby are former tanks, used for target practice. As long as you do not leave the carriageways you are able to take photos, etc.
Our first Imbibing Imber Twixmas gathering was in the Church in 2012 and were bowled over by the number of cachers who braved the rain to make the event the success it turned out to be. In 2013 we returned for Imbibing Imber II and to bright, Winter sunshine. We are very grateful to the Church for allowing us to be there.
What better than to attend a Geocaching Event between Christmas and New Year?
A time when we all want to walk off some of the excesses of Christmas! Here is your opportunity!
Due to the overwhelming success of previous events, we plan to gather this year at a former ancient battlefield nearby. The area abutts the Imber Ranges.
Meet up at around 12:00 hrs, at the co-ordinates, where you'll log the event and perhaps take a few photos, eat your picnic lunches, exchange Seasonal Greetings, etc. Bring a chair, your camera and binoculars. Food will be available close by at a small charge. The event will end at around 14:00 hrs, so you'll have time to visit Imber either before or after meeting up for the event.
EVENTS:
TB/GC Swapping and spotting: As is normal for events, there will be time for trackable swapping and spotting, why not drop your TBs in the box for another cacher to pick up and move on?
Whereigo craziness: As we're able to use a wide open space during the event... here's a bit of fun... Whack-a-Viking whereigo! You can download the cartridge here Why not make it a challenge? We have medals and a prize for the highest score.
PUNCH: as in previous years, our famous hot Imber punch will be available
NEW... Refreshments and grub available this year at small extra cost. Details to follow.
Please let us know in your log how many of you will be attending, and if you might want soup/food (Veggie or not)
