Geocache Description:

A short multi cache at St. Mary's Church, Shaw, Newbury.

St. Mary's Church is the parish church for the villages of Shaw and Donnington on the north side of Newbury. The original Saxon church was built on this site around 1000AD and the roof was said to be covered with antique roman tiles.

On Sunday 21st March 1841 the last service was performed in the old building and its demolition started the next day and on the 1st June the first stone of the present church was laid by Rev. Samuel Slocock. The original font, bells and memorial tablets were transferred to the new building. The present church was consecrated on 6th September 1842 by the Bishop of Oxford.

The architecture of the present building is a mix of reproductions of various styles. There is a tower with a spire at the west end together with an octagonal tower which used to provide access to the gallery. The main entrance is through the south porch with another through the west tower. The nave was built of sandstone and slate and roofed in the 12th Century style. The most ancient furnishing inside is the norman stone font.

The 14th Century style chancel, flint walled and tiled roof with organ chamber and vestry on the north were added in 1878. The organ was installed in 1879 shortly after the present chancel was built. It was dedicated and first played for a service on Easter Tuesday April 15th 1879.

History of the church taken from 'A Guide to St. Mary's Church, Shaw-cum-donnington' by Alfred E Shadlock, 1992. Available in Newbury Library.

Congratulations to parallel sticks for FTF.

To find the cache you need to first find some information at the church. The cache is then a short distance away over good paths and is a small turtle box big enough for small swaps and travel bugs. Please take care when retrieving the cache as the final location is popular with dog walkers and is also a well used route to local schools and work places so can get very busy at times.

The coordinates above take you to the lychgate which was erected by W P Blackburne-Maze in memory of his wife.
