Geocache Description:

Located in the grounds of GMIT Castlebar; formerly St Marys Psychiatric Hospital.

Opened in 1886, originally called the District Lunatic Asylum, this building was once home to 1300 residents. Many sad stories are forever sealed in the walls & fabric of this building. Now used as GMIT Castlebar Campus-a Third Level College, it is worth a wander inside to imagine what this place would have been like when in operation as an "asylum". You can see some of the cell-like wards now used as offices.

The Cache
The cache is a small container placed in a tree near the parking area in front of the college. Follow the path from the parking area in NW direction for approx 150m. The tree is on your right before junction with the path running parallel to the main road. Please be careful retrieving/replacing the cache, as the area can be muggled.
