天使突抜の由来
下京区の五条通りを挟んだ東中筋通りに天使突抜というなんとも不思議な地名があります。天使だなんてなんと神秘的でしょう。いい所にある土地なので是非住んでみたいとすら思いますが、この地名は秀吉と京都人との意見の擦れ違いから生まれました。
天下統一を成し遂げ、京都にいた豊臣秀吉は、上京(かみぎょう/御所付近)のにぎわいを下京(しもぎょう/現在の京都駅付近)方面まで続かせる為、上京から下京まで一本大きな通りを作りました。その道の途中にあったのが古くからの神が祭られている由緒ある神社「五条天神宮」でした。義経と弁慶が出会った場所として知られているこの五条天神は天使様とよばれ当時の人々に親しまれていたのですが、道を境内に無理やり通してしまった為「天使様を突き抜けてまで道を作るのか！」と怒り、皮肉の意味を込めて天使突抜と名付けました。
秀吉は現在の愛知県の生まれですから当時京都と何のかかわりもない外界の人間のくせ、死ぬまで京都を大規模にかえってしまった為、非常に京都の人々には嫌われていました。その為、秀吉の邸宅は京都人の恨みによる破壊で現在は跡形も残っていないそうです。
