Historique
Le projet de géocachette sur le rôle du Nouveau-Brunswick durant la Grande Guerre (NBGWGP en anglais) a été commandé par le Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. Ce projet a pour but de commémorer le sacrifice de milliers de Néo-Brunswickois et Néo-Brunswickoises qui ont courageusement accepté de prendre les armes pour défendre leur roi et leur pays. La géocachette met l’accent sur les soldats du Nouveau-Brunswick et sur ceux qui étaient là pour les appuyer. This cache location
One of the largely unknown New Brunswick stories of the Great War involves the German saboteur, Lieutenant Werner Horn, who attempted to blow up the Canadian Pacific Railway Bridge over the St Croix River with a suitcase of nitroglycerine. Recruited by Franz Von Papen, German military attaché in Washington DC before the United States had entered the Great War, Horn travelled to Vanceboro ME where the CPR Main Line crossed the St. Croix and passed through nearby McAdam en route to the ports of Saint John and Halifax. Therefore, the bridge was a vital link over which materials and supplies destined for the war effort in Europe travelled. On the night of 2 February 1915, he walked across the train bridge to the New Brunswick side to plant the explosives, but Horn’s attempt caused only minor damage. He surrendered to the American authorities as he did not want to be shot as a spy. He was later tried in Fredericton and was sentenced to 10 years in the Dorchester Penitentiary.

En effet, peu de gens connaissent l’histoire du lieutenant Werner Horn, qui a tenté de faire exploser le pont du Chemin de fer Canadien Pacifique enjambant la rivière Sainte-Croix avec une valise remplie de nitroglycérine. Recruté par Franz Von Papen, attaché militaire allemand posté à Washington D.C. avant même que les États-Unis n’entrent en guerre, Werner Horn s’est rendu à Vanceboro, au Maine, où la ligne principale du Canadien Pacifique traverse la rivière Sainte Croix et passe par McAdam à proximité, en direction des ports de Saint John et Halifax. Le pont ferroviaire était donc un lien crucial grâce auquel les matériaux et les fournitures destinés à l'effort de guerre pouvaient être envoyés en Europe. Pendant la nuit du 2 février 1915, Werner Horn traverse le pont ferroviaire à pied et dépose des explosifs du côté du Nouveau Brunswick, mais l’attentat ne cause que des dommages mineurs. Il se rend donc aux autorités américaines pour éviter d’être tué pour espionnage. Il est ensuite jugé à Fredericton et condamné à une peine de 10 ans au pénitencier de Dorchester.
