Geocache Description:

#47 Our Emerald Isle: New Castle Road West-Newcastle West Town Newcastle West is the largest town in west County Limerick excluding Limerick city. Parts of the Desmond Banqueting Hall here date from the 13th century; the current Desmond Castle is from the 15th century. Philomena Lee was born in Newcastle West on March 24, 1933. In February 2014 she discussed the church's adoption policies with Pope Francis. The poet Michael Hartnett (1941-1999) is a most favorite son of the town. An Irish poet, he wrote in both English and Irish and is referred to as Munster's de facto poet laureate. There is a literary and arts festival each April. At the 2011 event a life-sized statue of the poet was unveiled.
