Geocache Description:

#23 Our Emerald Isle: Shannon Road - Shannon River The River Shannon begins at Shannon Pot in County Cavan at an elevation of 328 feet. It is Ireland's longest river at 224 miles and its largest river by the flow rate. Its SSW course takes it through or between eleven counties and for many centuries formed a physical barrier between the east and west of this Emerald Isle. The river with its three lakes of Lough Allen, Ree, and Dreng ends at the Shannon Estuary at Limerick City where St. John's Castle is located. In the 10th century this is where the Vikings began their journey up the Shannon to raid monasteries. Work to improve navigation began in 1755. After years of cargo traffic it is now popular for canoeing, kayaking, and cruising. The composer and lyricist of Where the River Shannon Flows was James I. Russell. It was recorded 1-2-1914 at Camden, New Jersey. The vocalist John McCormack, an Irish American tenor, was renowned for his renditions of sentimental Irish-themed songs such as this. The Chorus: Where dear old Shannon's flowing, where the three leaved shamrock grows, where my heart is I am going to my little Irish rose; and the moment that I meet her, with a hug and kiss I'll greet her, for there's not a colleen sweeter where the River Shannon flows.
