Geocache Description:

This is our first attempt at a letterbox hybrid. There are not many in the area and I hope we did a great job!

Alligators are less aggressive than crocodiles and they hibernate during the winter. In summer female alligators build nests on banks above the high water mark and they each can lay up to about 30 eggs. The nests are not incubated but they do maintain a pretty constant temperature within the nest. They have on average about 80 teeth and as teeth are worn or lost they are replaced. In the average lifetime each alligator will replace about 2,000 and 3,000 total teeth. The longest recorded length of an alligator is about 19 feet and 2 inches (about 5.8 meters).

The American alligator is a carnivore (obviously) and eats a variety of; insects, crayfish, crabs, fish, frogs, rats, birds, muskrats, beavers, raccoon, snakes, turtles and deer.

There are several ways adult reptiles lose their lives and habitat including humans and interspecific fighting. Alligator eggs and baby alligators are preyed upon by bobcats, raccoon, hogs, fish, wading birds, and otters. Bears tend to destroy the nests.

These reptiles typically live in southeastern United States in; ponds, lakes, canals, rivers, swamps, bayous, and coastal marshes.
