Geocache Description:

A nice little P&G located by the Burton Courthouse Cemetary. Although it is not necessary to enter the cemetary, a respectful walk amoung the grave markers will give you a better glimpse of the history of the area.

My father-in-law Royden Morgan [1903-1998] taught in a number of smaller rural schools in NB during the twenties and early thirties. Upon his passing, we discovered a great number of old B&W photos of his earlier life as a teacher with many of the photos unfortunately containing little if any info as to who, what, where, or when regarding the subject of the photo. One of the photos was of 3 young boys by a fence in their winter outdoor clothing but the photo also contained the wording "Edwin Young, a student of mine". After much searching, we discovered that the young boy mentioned was one of Mr. Morgan's students at the old Burton Schoolhouse in the school year 1923-1924, the first or second year that Mr. Morgan began teaching. We later learned that this particular boy had tragically drowned later the same year [summer 1924], at the age of 11. The report of the drowning appeared in the August 26th, 1924 edition of the Daily Gleaner, stating that Edwin and a younger companion had gone down to the local wharf to check on a shipment of local tomatoes for his family and had fallen off the wharf while fishing and drowned. The grave marker for Edwin C. Young [1913-1924] can be found next to his parent's marker, and the remnants of the local wharf along the banks of the Saint John River can still be seen just east of the Burton Bridge. Although he never mentioned this tragedy to his family during his life time, Royden would have been very moved by young Edwin's passing [one of his first students] as he himself was only a young man of 21 years of age at the time.
