The Green Fly
This cache is hidden at a location that once was known at “The Green Fly”, a dance hall run by a notorious murderer and bootlegger, Tossie King.
Tuscaloosa Police Officer W. G. “Will” Thrower was murdered by Tossie King on August 23, 1914. Officer Thrower was shot and killed while speaking with a person outside of The Green Fly. Tossie King approached the two, started arguing with Officer Thrower, and then shot him four times. The circumstances of the murder were shrouded in mystery due to the reluctance of witnesses to talk about the case. A short time after the killing, Tossie King went to the home of Chief Deputy Sheriff R.C. Cornell and gave himself up. He was placed in the county jail where he was held without bail. This was the second Tuscaloosa Police Officer that Tossie King had killed.
Tossie King had previously murdered Officer J.A. Mansfield on November 20, 1912. In somewhat similar circumstances, Office Mansfield was killed by King near the A.G.S. Depot behind Tom Anderson’s restaurant. Tossie King was acquitted of Officer Mansfield's murder but was convicted of Officer Thrower's murder.
Office Thrower was involved in the investigation of several cases charging Tossie King with violations of the prohibition law. Tuscaloosa City Commissioners, for the previous several years, had instructed the police officers to be diligent in an effort to stop the traffic in liquor. Officer Thrower had been praised by many city officials for his diligence and bravery in policing one of the most difficult beats of the city and enforcing the prohibition law.
