La Battaglia di Campaldino
Il più grande combattimento campale andato in scena nel centro Italia durante il medioevo mise di fronte guelfi fiorentini e ghibellini aretini quando correva l`11 giugno dell`anno 1289, giorno di San Barnaba, nella battaglia di Campaldino.
I primi, forti di mille cavalieri e 10 mila fanti, erano guidati da Guglielmo di Durfort e Amerigo di Narbona, i secondi, con 800/900 cavalieri e 9 mila fanti, dal vescovo Guglielmino degli Ubertini.
Dopo diverse ore un improvviso e violento temporale mise fine agli scontri fra le opposte fazioni. Firenze, vittoriosa sul campo, assumeva il ruolo di città egemone della Toscana, viceversa, contemporaneamente alla disfatta, il partito ghibellino abbandonava per sempre ogni velleità di potere.
Anche Dante, il padre della lingua italiana e autore della Divina Commedia, quand`era poco più che ventenne prese parte alla battaglia di Campaldino.
La piana di Campaldino si trova fra gli abitati di Pratovecchio e Poppi (dove sorge maestoso quello che possiamo considerare il più bel castello d`Arezzo, nonché prototipo di Palazzo Vecchio a Firenze).
The Battle of Campaldino
The largest pitched battle went on stage in Central Italy during the middle ages placed in front of the Florentine Guelphs and Ghibellines aretini when he ran the 11 June 1289, day of St. Barnabas, in the battle of Campaldino.
The first of a thousand Knights and 10 thousand infantrymen, were led by Guillaume de Durfort and Amerigo di Narbona, seconds, with 800/900 9 thousand Knights and foot soldiers, by Bishop Guglielmino Ubertini.
After several hours, a sudden and violent storm put an end to the clashes between the opposing factions. Florence, victorious on the field, assumed the role of dominant cities of Tuscany, on the other hand, at the same time as the rout, the Ghibelline party abandoned forever any ambitions for power.
Also Dante, the father of the Italian language and author of the Divine Comedy, when it was little more than 20 took part in the battle of Campaldino.
The plain of Campaldino lies between the towns of Pratovecchio and Poppi, where stands majestically what we consider the most beautiful castle of Arezzo as well as prototype of Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.
