Thunder Bay was my hometown for six years over 30 years ago. After moving back to Finland I have visited here several times, we have so many friends and lots of good memories from Thunder Bay. This cache is my memory cache of Thunder Bay and of Canada.
At 1950s and -60s lots of Finnish immigrants came to Canada. They were lutherans and they wanted to build a Lutheran church for Finnish residents in Port Arthur. Their first church was in downtown, at the corner of Secord and Dufferin streets. Soon services where held also in English and in some forty years especially the English speaking congrecation crew up and they needed a bigger church, so they sold the old church and builded a beautiful, big church at Hilldale Rd mainly by voluntary work of the congrecants! Funny thing is that on Dufferin St there was a catholic church one blog away from the Finnish church. The Catholic church burned down and they builded a new church at Hilldale Rd too, some times earlier than the Finnish Church was builded. Catholic congrecants helped their Finnish neighbours with the roofing of the new church. On the same compound owned by the Lutheran church the Hilldale Garden condos and the Hilldale Gardens Retirement home where builded later. At the given coordinates there is an information board, look from it: What time does the Finnish Service start on Sundays?
