The GeoTrail

The New Brunswick Great War GeoTrail Project (NBGWGP) was commissioned by the Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. The aim of the NBGWGP is to commemorate the valiant effort and sacrifice of the thousands of New Brunswick men and women who answered the call to arms for King and Canada. The NBGWGP is intended to focus on the soldiers of New Brunswick and those that provided them with comfort. It is our hope that you will learn from this GeoTrail and spend a moment to reflect on the sacrifices at home and abroad. Lest we forget

 Historique
Le projet de géocachette sur le rôle du Nouveau-Brunswick durant la Grande Guerre (NBGWGP en anglais) a été commandé par le Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. Ce projet a pour but de commémorer le sacrifice de milliers de Néo-Brunswickois et Néo-Brunswickoises qui ont courageusement accepté de prendre les armes pour défendre leur roi et leur pays. La géocachette met l’accent sur les soldats du Nouveau-Brunswick et sur ceux qui étaient là pour les appuyer. Nous espérons que vous trouverez cette activité enrichissante et que vous prendrez un instant pour songer aux sacrifices qu’ont accomplis ces gens, tant au pays qu’à l’étranger.

This cache location
Herman J. Good was born in Bathurst, NB in 1887. He went to school locally and became a farmer and lumberman. In June 1915, he enlisted in the 55th Battalion (New Brunswick & Prince Edward Island), CEF at Sussex, NB. Eventually, he joined the 13th Battalion, Royal Highlanders of Canada and fought at the Somme and Vimy Ridge. Corporal Good was awarded the Victoria Cross for gallant conduct on 8August 1918 during the Battle of Amiens. After the war he returned home and became a fish, game and fire warden. He died in 1969 and is buried in St. Albans Cemetery in Bathurst. In 2006, a new Commonwealth War Graves Commission gravestone that features the Victoria Cross was installed in his name in the cemetery. It is the only headstone of its kind in New Brunswick and one of only five found in Canada. A cairn with a plaque that describes how Good won his VC is found near the entrance to the cemetery.

Après la guerre, il est rentré à la maison et est devenu garde-chasse et pêche et gardien incendie. Il est décédé en 1969 et est enterré au cimetière Saint Albans, à Bathurst. En 2006, une nouvelle pierre tombale de la Commission des sépultures de guerre du Commonwealth, décorée d’une Croix de Victoria, a été installée en son nom au cimetière.
