The GeoTrail
The New Brunswick Great War Geocaching Project (NBGWGP) was commissioned by the Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. The aim of the NBGWGP is to commemorate the valiant effort and sacrifice of the thousands of New Brunswick men and women who answered the call to arms for King and Canada. The NBGWGP is intended to focus on the soldiers of New Brunswick and those that provided them with comfort. Historique
Le projet de géocachette sur le rôle du Nouveau-Brunswick durant la Grande Guerre (NBGWGP en anglais) a été commandé par le Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. Ce projet a pour but de commémorer le sacrifice de milliers de Néo-Brunswickois et Néo-Brunswickoises qui ont courageusement accepté de prendre les armes pour défendre leur roi et leur pays. La géocachette met l’accent sur les soldats du Nouveau-Brunswick et sur ceux qui étaient là pour les appuyer. Nous espérons que vous trouverez cette activité enrichissante et que vous prendrez un instant pour songer aux sacrifices qu’ont accomplis ces gens, tant au pays qu’à l’étranger.

This cache location
After the First World War captured enemy guns were presented to communities across Canada to commemorate the country’s contribution to the war effort. Several “trophy guns” can be found in New Brunswick. Among them is a German 77 mm field gun that is located on the hill overlooking Branch #36 of the Royal Canadian Legion at Perth-Andover, NB. Another 77 mm German field gun was given to the Town of Woodstock in 1920 and is on display on Main Street. Two German guns can be found in Hopewell Cape, NB. The first is another 77 mm gun which Albert County received in July 1920 because of the large numbers of Albert County men who joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force. The county had the distinction of being the county with the most people per capita joining the CEF in Canada. The second gun is a larger 105 mm gun that was captured by Canadian troops during the Battle of Vimy Ridge. It was won by the people of Albert County in the 1919 Victory Loans Campaign when they raised $317,000, nearly tripling their goal of $110,000.

Après la Première Guerre mondiale, les pièces d’artillerie prises à l’ennemi ont été présentées un peu partout au pays pour rappeler la contribution du Canada à l’effort de guerre. Le Nouveau-Brunswick compte plusieurs trophées de guerre, dont un canon de campagne de 77 mm de l’armée allemande, que l’on peut voir sur la colline surplombant la filiale no 36 de la Légion royale canadienne, à Perth-Andover. Un deuxième canon de campagne allemand de 77 mm, donné à la Ville de Woodstock en 1920, est exposé le long de la rue Main. Par ailleurs, deux canons allemands sont conservés à Hopewell Cape. Le premier est un autre canon de campagne de 77 mm offert au comté d’Albert en juillet 1920 en raison du grand nombre d’hommes de la région qui se sont joints au Corps expéditionnaire canadien (CEC). Le comté d’Albert avait la particularité d’être le comté où, proportionnellement, plus de gens se sont joints au CEC que partout ailleurs au Canada. La seconde pièce d’artillerie est un canon de 105 mm qui a été pris à l’ennemi par les troupes canadiennes durant la bataille de la crête de Vimy. Il a été remporté par les résidents du comté d’Albert lors de la campagne d’emprunt de la Victoire de 1919, pendant laquelle ils ont amassé 317 000 $, triplant presque leur objectif de 110 000 $.
