The GeoTrail

The New Brunswick Great War Geocaching Project (NBGWGP) was commissioned by the Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. The aim of the NBGWGP is to commemorate the valiant effort and sacrifice of the thousands of New Brunswick men and women who answered the call to arms for King and Canada. The NBGWGP is intended to focus on the soldiers of New Brunswick and those that provided them with comfort. It is our hope that you will learn from this GeoTrail and spend a moment to reflect on the sacrifices at home and abroad. Lest we forget

Le projet de géocachette sur le rôle du Nouveau-Brunswick durant la Grande Guerre (NBGWGP en anglais) a été commandé par le Gregg Centre for the Study of War & Society. Ce projet a pour but de commémorer le sacrifice de milliers de Néo-Brunswickois et Néo-Brunswickoises qui ont courageusement accepté de prendre les armes pour défendre leur roi et leur pays. La géocachette met l’accent sur les soldats du Nouveau-Brunswick et sur ceux qui étaient là pour les appuyer. Nous espérons que vous trouverez cette activité enrichissante et que vous prendrez un instant pour songer aux sacrifices qu’ont accomplis ces gens, tant au pays qu’à l’étranger.

This cache location
Nursing sisters were an integral part of the Canadian Army Medical Corps. Often placed near the frontline, they ministered to injuries for which no one could have trained them, and they were seen as angels of compassion by the soldiers whose lives they saved. They served in a total of 31 military hospitals and casualty clearing stations in France, Belgium, Greece, Malta and the Eastern Mediterranean. By 1918, more than 3,000 single Canadian women had left their familiar surroundings and volunteered to serve their country by caring for the wounded and sick overseas. Their primary tasks were to give the wounded comfort and try to ensure their safe return home. The work was hard and dangerous. Hospitals and hospital ships were bombed. Nurses frequently cared for the wounded while shells exploded around them. Canada’s Nursing Sisters incurred a considerable number of casualties as a result of both disease and enemy attacks. Sixty-one nurses were killed in the line of duty.

En 1918, plus de 3 000 célibataires canadiennes avaient quitté leur foyer pour se porter volontaires et servir leur pays en prenant soin des blessés et des malades outre-mer. Leurs principales tâches consistaient à apporter un certain réconfort aux blessés et à tenter de faire en sorte qu’ils rentrent au pays en vie. Il s’agissait d’un travail difficile et dangereux. Les hôpitaux et les navires-hôpitaux étaient bombardés. Il arrivait souvent que les infirmières s’occupent des blessés pendant que des obus explosaient tout autour. Un nombre important d’infirmières militaires canadiennes ont perdu la vie, succombant à la maladie ou aux attaques de l’ennemi. Soixante et une infirmières sont mortes en service commandé.
