50 years after the event, a mural depicting Officer Lonnie Zamora's close encounter with a UFO on the outskirts of Socorro was painted on a diversion spillway by a very talented artist. This geocache will give you the opportunity of standing where the UFO landed, burned the chapparal and took off again as Officer Zamora approached. Some say the flying craft was a New Mexico Tech student prank, some say it came from the White Sands Airforce base, some say it came from outer space. Regardless, it remains one of the best documented UFO sightings to date. Don't you just love New Mexico?
Park on the side of the road near the coordinates. Please don't walk on the mural. The first coordinate is located at the top of the spillway. There you'll find 2 rows of decimal numbers, add/subtract them (depending on their sign) from the first coordinate minutes (lat on top, long below) and proceed to the new coordinates. Find a second set of decimal numbers that you'll add/subtract from the 2nd coordinate's minutes (lat on top, long below). The resulting coordinate will lead you to the landing site. Stand in the middle of the landing pad (marked by 4 stone rings), locate the cross, and take 10 paces towards it. Geocache container is in the place you would expect it to be.
