In the Babylon 5 univserse, the problem of years'-long journeys through space is solved by the technology of jumpgates. Huge structures in space generate a spatial vortex, or jumppoint into hyperspace allowing any ship to travel interstellar distances. Some advanced ships can form their own jumppoints without a jumpgate, but the gates are the most frequent method of entering hyperspace.
