座標の位置に建つ薬師堂は、1600年7月21日に、真田昌幸と、息子たちである真田信幸（信之）、真田信繁（幸村）の3人が、真田家の将来について密談した場所という伝説があります。
真田家が、徳川家康の率いる東軍あるいは石田三成が率いる西軍のどちらに加わるかを話し合いました。
結果、昌幸と信繁は西軍、信幸は東軍に加わることになりました。
それぞれの婚姻関係や、両軍に分かれることで真田家を存続させるため、という理由ではないか、と考えられています。
7月23日に昌幸たちは上田に帰る途中に、信幸の城である、沼田城に立ち寄りますが、信幸の妻である小松姫は、昌幸たちが城に入ることを拒否したそうです。
しかし、こっそりと子供たちを連れて近くの寺で面会したそうです。
