Geocache Description:

Downtown La Plata was destroyed by an F4 tornado on April 28, 2002, killing four. An earlier F4 ripped through La Plata in 1926, killing 13 school children.
The Star Memorial Garden memorializes those two tragedies.

A garden built in memory of those people who helped rebuild the town after the tragic F4 tornado that hit the town of LaPlata in April, 2002.
It also includes a memorial to the LaPlata Star, which for many years was lit up over the town on the water tower since 1949. I'm told the original star was erected by Mr. Harry Beck with the help of Southern Maryland Electric, where he was employed.
When the tornado took down the water tower, a new star was put up in its place.
One of the reasons we enjoy caching is that it takes us places we would never have visited otherwise, or would have never realized they were there. This is one of those close to home places.
