When my brother-in-law was in the Army, he and his family were stationed at a lot of different military bases. As result, his children grew up attending many different veteran ceremonies. As is customary, the posting of colors, followed by The Pledge of Allegiance is always the first order of business.
My brother-in-law and my sister-in-law have three children: Patrice, Justice, and Lucas. When the kids were small and they were present to participate in The Pledge of Allegence, conversation went as such:
"I pledge allegiance to the Flag, of the United States of America,
and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation, under God.
indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
With her right hand still placed over her heart, Patrice would turn to her mother and say, "and Lucas, too!"
