One of the guidelines for placing caches in the Great Parks of Hamilton County is that the cache needs to be within 25 feet of an authorized trail. (This is for your safety and not to tear up undeveloped sections of the park.) For these geocaches your "trail" is the lake, and the caches must be approached from the lake. DO NOT BUSHWHACK TO THE CACHE over land. If we suspect a find has been logged without use of a watercraft - it will be deleted! If many start doing it the caches may need to be archived :-(
Winton Woods has a boat house with many types of watercraft you can rent - if you don't own one.
There is other "special equipment" you should always bring when doing paddle caches:
- Tweezers or hemostat to extract logs from tubes
- Permanent ink felt tip marker to sign vinyl and damp paper logs
- Maybe some spare log paper
Most of these caches should be obtainable from inside a shallow draft boat. A few you might need to step out on some rocks. The containers are either long slim (4" long, 3/8" diameter) tubes, or "whizzbangs" made from the ends of a gatorade bottle. The lake was about 1 foot below typical summer pool. If the water level is high - like in the spring time - some of the root hides may not be be available.
If you run into trouble the boat house phone # is (513) 931-1849
