Sadie and Sam lived with us for only about eight to ten years, far from Arizona. They were both affectionate, but formed a close team and slept and hunted together. Like Cinnamon, who was to join us later, they had a great sense of humor, but they kept their jokes between themselves. One day, a sister and I went to the window when we heard a dog barking out front. There, we saw Sam with his hair bristled up, backing toward a tall elm tree baring his teeth and hissing at a tall boxer, who was advancing fast. It was happening far too fast for me to get out the door and try to assist in any defense or possible armistice. But that's just as well, because the whole vicious stand-off and deadly retreat was just sucker's game. Sadie bounded down, off the second of our two elms, behind the boxer, and ran and jumped on his back. The dog reacted in a panic! Sadie rode off on his back for maybe thirty yards before jumping off, near a neighbor's tree, while Sam watched from out in the street. Unfortunately, Sam was later injured while out late one night; temperatures dropped into the -20s, and he froze to death. Sadie became apathetic after that and was gone within a year or two. But their crazy eight years or so together were fun.
