Geocache Description:

The tradition of celebrating the mid-Winter solstice dates back at least to the Roman Saturnalia festival - an acknowledgement that Winter was half over and on its way out to longer days and new growth. This was signified by the bringing of evergreens into the home and the exchange of gifts.

By the 4th Century the Roman Catholic church, being unable to remove Saturnalia, incorporated the holiday into Christian tradition as a celebration of Christ's birth - the Festival of the Nativity and named it Christes maesse.

This became Christmas, and the Germanic tradition to decorate an evergreen tree arose from around the 16th Century. Early decorations consisted of edible fruits, nuts, and lighted candles.

In the southern hemisphere a Norfolk Pine is typically used as a living Christmas tree due to its symmetrical shape.

Here in New Zealand the native Pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa) owing to its spectacular flowering of bright red stamens coinciding with Christmas is our living Christmas tree.

North Taranaki at Urenui is the natural southern limit of coastal pohutukawa, and in fact all trees south of latitude 38° are planted - predominately as cultivars produced by the local Duncan & Davies nursery between 1910 and 1985, and transported all over New Zealand and the world.

Here in Taranaki we also have another variety of Christmas tree, owing to the province's close association with the oil industry. This cache is an example, as usually they are off limits within an existing oil production field.

The cache is on the roadside and it is not necessary to enter private land. Because of the location in a busy industrial & high muggle area, stealth will be required.

Bring your own writing stick

I would recommend attempting this cache after hours or weekends. Merry Christmas
