Geocache Description:

Known Only To God. A cache near a sailors' grave in Seaside, Oregon. The grave and monument are at the U.S. flag 140 feet to the east. Due to concerns from the neighbors the cache is not at the monument.

This is near the site where three sailors, or persons believed to be sailors, were found on the beach in 1865. Very little is known about them, hence the name of this cache. On April 24, 1865, John Hobson was on the beach near the foot of Tillamook Head when he met three sailors. “They had come ashore from a small sailing ship which had anchored off the Head and they were looking for a supply of fresh water. When he left them, Hobson knew that they were going to try to get back to their ship before dark. Then the wind came up, the ocean got very rough and by dusk he felt sure they would be in trouble.” Hobson then built a large bonfire on the beach and kept it going most of the night to help the sailors return to shore if they were able to, but it was no use. The next day their bodies washed in and he buried them on the rise of the high tide line. There is no record of the name of the ship or its captain. Currently, the neighbors care for the site and keep the flag flying. Please be respectful and enjoy your visit to this historic place.
