Geocache Description:

Fence Series

Rail fences - horse high, pig tight and bull strong.

Fences have held a special fascination for me since I moved to this area. Never have I seen so many rail fences and other interesting styles of fences than exist here. This series will take you to a variety of fence types and styles that can be found in the Carden area.

Cribs

Although this crib is on granite instead of the usual limestone of Carden, it shows clearly how cribs work and why they are used. With bedrock so close to the surface, it is difficult to dig post holes. With little support, fences will be flimsy, unable to withstand weather or animals. Cribs such as this one provide a firmly solid end which allows a wire fence to be pulled tightly.

I’ve helped to build and fill one of these cribs and it was very hard work but cribs are worth the effort. If you look around Carden you will see just how many of them exist out there. Some of them are over a hundred years old.
