Geocache Description:

A short multi-cache that takes you round the Church of England parish church of East Hendred.

The Church of St. Augustine of Cambridge, East Hendred dates back to the 12th century and consists of a chancel, nave, north vestry, north transept, north aisle, two south aisles and a west tower. The earliest existing part of the church is the south arcade of the nave which dates from the late 12th century. In the 14th century the north aisle was rebuilt and the north transept was added. The three stage tower was added in the 15th century. If you look carefully you can see a sundial on the south face of the tower and the holes in its walls are 'put-logs' that were used to support the scaffold when it was erected.

The church is home to a 13th century lectern that depicts a crusader's foot standing on a dragon's head. The Jacobean pulpit carries the carved heads of Charles I and Oliver Cromwell. The church also houses a rare working example of a faceless clock made by Henry Seymour of Wantage in 1525. The clock has been hand wound daily for nearly 500 years. As well as chiming and striking, the clock plays the Angel's Hymn  every three hours.

Those of you of a certain political persuasion might be interested to know that on 1 June 1996 one David Cameron married a certain Samantha Sheffield at the Church of St. Augustine of Canterbury, East Hendred. I wonder what became of them?

Parking is on the street in front of the church (N51 35.666 W001 20.276).

The published coordinates (N51 35.675 W001 20.289) take you to the north side of the church where you will see a window with a date set in the top of it. Call this date 18AB. To the right is a downpipe. The date on hopper at the top of the downpipe is 18CD.

Now make your way to the west door (N51 35.669 W001 20.320). Above the door you will see a large window. To the right of the window 'BG' has left their mark in the year 18EF.

Now head to the south door where you will find a bench with an inscription (N51 35.664 W001 20.304). The number of  letters in the name of the town at the bottom of the plaque is G.

Now work out where the cache is using the following formula:

N51 35.(G+E)(A-C)E

W001 20.(B-E)DF

The cache is a 15 ml tube containing a log only.
