History
Gortnalone (North and South) is a sizeable townload of about 615 acres in East Galway. Gort-na-lone has two translations : Firstly, Gort-na-lun : The field of the Blackbird, or Gort-na-lán : The field of the Spears, the latter interpretation describes a celtic era battle that took place here.
Located in the field behind the cache is a Cillín or Childrens burial ground which was still in use up to the 1950's
Either side of the main road are a number of earthan works dating back to prehistoric times.
