Huntington Ingalls - Newport News Shipbuilding and the City of Newport News have collaborated on establishing a walking trail in downtown Newport News for employees and the public to enjoy a walk in the outdoors through downtown Newport News. This series follows the trail through caches placed near some of the 0.1 mile markers along the trail. Because of personal space limitations on geocaches, not all the markers are covered, but I did what I could.
Based on personal observations on parking availability and muggle density in this downtown area, I recommend that the best time to find these caches is after 5 pm (M-F) or on weekends. To help in finding a good parking place during weekday searches, I have provided coordinates to a convenient parking spot for a small hourly fee, and this series should take less than an hour to complete.
Enjoy the walk, which takes you through some of downtown and to the Victory Arch, then around the Virginia Advanced Shipbuilding and Carrier Integration Center (VASCIC).
As of 7/17/15, the container has been relocated and is not as near to the MP 0.1 sign as it used to be. If you are attempting to also walk the trail, the MP sign is located at N 36 58.700 and W 076 25.717.
All cachers, and especially those with small cachers, please be mindful traffic on the road.
