Eskers are geological formations left behind when a glacier retreats. Humans have found a number of ways to use these sand and gravel filled ridges. They have been quarried for building and roadway materials, have provided settlements either with shelter from winds or with defensive vantage points and they have been used as graveyards. With their softer sandy soils, it was much easier to dig a grave in an esker than in rock or in clay soils. An added benefit is that the elevated burial site places the body closer to heaven.
If you look around at this cemetery, you will see that it is built on a hill, the ground is soft under foot and if you check out the laneway on the other side of the road, you will see just how sandy this area is. Whether this is an esker or not, I do not know as I am not a geologist. But when you wander out to do other cemetery caches, check out how many of the cemeteries, particularly the old ones, are placed on hilltops.
As always, be respectful of your surroundings. No night time caching please.
