Geocache Description:

Three members of CACCBAG were here to show the view to my father and my stepmom who were visiting from California.   I loved it so much I decided it deserved an Earthcache.  Remember - stay on all paths/trails - do not trample any plants.   All information you need is located at the interpretive signs located at the site - plus what you can see with your own eyes from the outlook.  Enjoy this view and the geology lesson.


Over a million years ago, a volcanic super-eruption obliterated life as it buried eastern Idaho, spewing ash over much of the current US. In this area, the ash solidified into the Mesa Falls Tuff that you see across the canyon.

Water found its path, slowly etching through the tuff, patiently carving the canyon you see today.

Please answer me these questions:

(1) There are two main types of rocks that make up the canyon, one on the side on which you are standing and the other across the canyon on the other side. Describe to me how the two sides differ. Which side is more solid? Which side is made of rubble? What do you believe caused the rubble?

(2) The vertical cliffs on the side of the gorge where you are standing were forged from molten lava flows that erupted ____ miles northwest about ___________ years ago.

(3) After an eruption of molten granite, a resulting dust cloud of ash billowed thousands of feet high before it settled and solidified into __________ ______________?

(4) The falls appear at that one particular point. Do you believe the rock formation at the upper part of the falls were more erosion-resistant or were the rocks under the falls more erosion resistant? Explain why you made your choice.
(5) Tell me how many steps are listed leading to a Caldera formation.

(6) According to one sign, if you travel through the Yellowstone region, you will likely pass through three different calderas. These were formed by three enormous volcanic eruptions and many smaller ones over the last _____ million years?

(7) At the overlook, look down on your side of the canyon. You will see a huge pile of boulders and rocks going from the cliff downward. What are these made of? What is the origin of these rocks?

(8) If you like, post a photo of your group, the falls, the surrounding area and/or a flying raptor (Bald Eagles and Osprey are common). Please make sure no photo reveals the signs.
