A DEVIL OF A HIKE Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Sapience Trek: A couple years ago the state of NY revised and clarified their policy on geocaching in state parks, most notably geocaching in the Niagara River gorge area. There were a few geocaches that the state had picked up and requested they be removed from this site. When the other caches were removed we did not perform a "search and destroy" to find caches that were in violation of this new policy.

The current policy, last revised in August 2013, makes it very clear that geocaches are not allowed in this area due to security and safety concerns. The full policy can be found on the NY state park site here:
http://nysparks.com/inside-our-agency/documents/OPRHPGeocacheGuidanceDocument.pdf

The state of New York maintains a mapping site which is helpful to determine the land any geocache is on. This can be found here:
http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/45415.html

After reading the current policy and after discussions with other reviewers it brings me no joy to have no choice but to archive this and other nearby caches per NYS policies. This will help maintain the mostly positive view that the state of New York has on geocaching, and keep geocaches allowed in most of the other state parks and DEC lands.

Should you be able to obtain a permit from the state of NY I will be thrilled to unarchive this cache listing.

Geocache Description:

A DEVIL OF A HIKE By MrMom, MrsMom and Goo. 26 May, 2002 N43*08.202 / W079*02.622

This is our second cache in the Lower Niagara River Gorge Series. This series begins at the Northern end of the river ( downstream ) with "RAPID ART" followed by "A DEVIL OF A HIKE", then "RAW POWER!", and finally "THE BIG KAHUNAS"." As you progress South ( upstream ) the level of difficulty increases. All hikes are near very steep cliffs without railings on well used trails. For your safety stay on the trails. No bushwhacking here. Follow waypoints carefully. Although we are experienced nighttime hikers, the last three caches should not be attempted at night. My seven year old daughter completed all hikes with minimal complaints. Please also visit our Upper Niagara River Series; the peaceful side of The Niagara. The series begins with "ERIE'S END" ( upstream ) followed by "FISH'S SPAWN" and ends with "THE OTHER SISTER." Don't forget your camera. All caches take you through Western New York's most picturesque river and lake views. The entire Upper Niagara Series follows clear and level paths and is well suited for the family. All readings were taken with a Garmin 176c and a Garmin III. Averaged accuracy's are better than 30 feet.

The cache is located within Devils Hole State Park in Niagara Falls NY off The Robert Moses Parkway. Park near and read the sign at N43*07.998 / W079*02.839. Walk Northeast to descend 410 steps and enter The Devils Hole. On the way out, you'll feel him burning in your legs and thighs. Stay on the lower trail. On the way back, sit-down at N43*08.095 / W079*02.858 for a "breaktaking" view. The trails for the most part stay dry. The Mighty Niagara awaits you.

Please return the cache to the EXACT location and cover.
