Geocache Description:

A short walk to a delightful and curious location beside the River Lyne accessible by public footpath or via Kirklinton Hall (when open).

This is a secret spot beside the River Lyne where there is a mysterious head carved into the cliff face (the Captain!) We couldn't discover much about it other than that it might have been carved there by a Captain living at nearby Kirklinton Hall when it was requisitioned during World War II. So, if anyone has more information please do put it in the log!

The site can be accessed during the summer months from the faerie garden of Kirklinton Hall which is being renovated. Opening times are quite limited so check in advance. However, it is also accessible at all times from the nearby public right of way.

Please note that conditions at the cache might become slippery or perhaps even inaccessible after heavy rain, so a visit at such times may be inadvisable, and on any occasion keep a close eye on kids as there are spots where you wouldn't want them to slip! Wear appropriate footwear. Seek the cache at your own risk!

If you are not entering via the Hall then please use the parking spot indicated by the waypoint at the church. Walk NE along the road to the signposted right of way. Follow the field edge until you see a gate on the right with an obvious path (marked with a yellow arrow) leading into the woods. Please note that you will need to cross the stream to get to the "seat" (and the cache) using the nice new bridge (the previous one collapsed recently)

The Captain himself is at the base of the cliff immediately below the bench. There is a well worn path leading around to it (to your right if you are facing the river). We recommend you pay homage to "The Captain" before trying the cache as this is probably the safest way to approach GZ (the alternative is more direct but steeper and slippery!)

There is a lot of tree cover so you may struggle to get a good signal.

*** Well done to toonburner for FTF! ***
