Geocache Description:

In the early 1900's Giovanni Oliviero Cache (known to his friends as Geo) was a legend in the hide and seek community. In 1913 he had just won his 3rd straight title in his home city of Rome, where he hid within a small space in the coliseum.

Geo can be seen here in his school photo. At the front, 4th from the right holding the bag.  His small height enabled him to fit into tiny spaces. Within the Hide and seek community he was known as 'Map Head' due to the fact he carried no paper maps, claiming he was able to memorize any map he looked at and log in his head.

In 1914 the HSC (Hide and Seek Community) decided for the first time to bring the hide and seek championship to the UK. Caterham was chosen as a venue and Geo came over from Italy to defend his title.

On 24th September Geo and his competitors assembled at ground zero (Asprey fountain in Caterham). Geo proudly wearing his 1913 winners medal.

The competitors were told the rules, which consisted of the following.

1) Hiders have 3 hours to find a hiding place, within 5 miles of ground zero.
2) No 2 hiders are to be closer than 160 meters apart
3) After 3 hours 100 'seekers' will leave ground zero to search for the hiders.
4) If spotted the seeker will point and shout "I see thee" at this point the hider must come out of their hiding place.
5) Last hider wins.

After 3 hours the seekers left ground zero, 2 were found near Tillingdown Farm, 3 more on Coulsdon Common, and 4 in the area around Woldingham School. This just left Geo to be found, and declared the winner.

After 24 hours searching Geo was still nowhere to be seen. Some say he made a run for it, to build a better life for himself in England. Some however, exactly 100 years on, believe he is still hidden, waiting to be found.

Due to this incident the following year in 1915 a time limit of 8 hours was placed on the competition and all competitors were given watches.

It is not one for short people

The GPS wasn't great, once in the general area look around for a very large tree.

You do not need to jump any fences to get to the cache..
