Geocache Description:

Josh's Electrical Sources: Piezoelectricity cache is a two stage mystery cache with a field puzzle at the first stage and is the second in a series of puzzle caches based upon the basic sources of electricity. The first stage is at the posted coordinates. Prior preparation is NOT required before leaving home to find this cache but viewing the support material may make the experience more meaningful. Both stages are regular size.


Piezoelectricity is the electric charge that accumulates in certain solid materials (such as crystals, certain ceramics) in response to applied mechanical stress. The word piezoelectricity means electricity resulting from pressure. Piezoelectricity was discovered in 1880 by French physicists Jacques and Pierre Curie. Crystals which acquire a charge when compressed, twisted or distorted are said to be piezoelectric. When applying pressure to a piezoelectric crystal the atoms making up the crystal are displaced a small amount making the atoms with a slight positive charge become closer to one surface and the negatively charged atoms are closer to the other surface. Some of the work done in deforming the crystal results in electrical energy. If the pressure is applied in such a way that tension results in the crystal the charge produced is of the opposite polarity.

When arriving at the first stage you will find a waterproof container containing the special Piezoelectricity demonstrator system. Open the cover of the first stage and push the start button. You should hear a beep. About nine seconds later you should hear two beeps. This indicates that the system is operational. The device next to the start button is a piezoelectric disc coated with a ceramic material which exhibits piezoelectric properties. You will be able to use the piezoelectric principle to generate some elecricity! Push the start button and after the first beep tap down firmly and quickly on the disc with your index finger. (Don’t overdo it!) You should have generated an electrical pulse which should have triggered the circuit to give you information about the coordinates of the final stage.

This cache is located within Lower Huron Metropark, a part of the Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority park system. A Metropark Vehicle Entry Permit is required: Annual Permit $30. Senior (62+) Permit $20. Daily Permit $7.
