The name William Street was used for a small street in central Masterton which is now officially closed. For many years it has been thought to commemorate Masterton's first mayor R.G. Williams but this appears to be incorrect. Many years later the Masterton Borough Council decided to close the western end of William Street, as it wanted to build the Ladies Rest Rooms in the street. Before they could legally close the street they found they had to open it. Somehow, despite being used as one for almost a hundred years, the area had never been legally declared a street. William Street is now informally known as Charlie's Lane in memory of Charles Jen Jensen, a local entertainer who passed away in 2009. Charlie was often seen busking & performing in this area.
This lane connects the main shopping area to one of the towns largest car parks. It is also popular for local workers as a lunch/cigarette break hangout. Therefore it is a very high traffic spot for muggles throughout the day.
